Basic Information About The Topic:
What is water pollution ... ?
Basically, water pollution is the contamination of water bodies like lakes, rivers, and
oceans. Water pollution occurs when pollutants are directly or indirectly discharged
into water bodies without proper and appropriate treatment to remove harmful
compounds.
The main and important cause of water pollution:
The main causes of water pollution are most often man
made and caused by increasing industrialization and
human activities. Mostly the water bodies get polluted with municipal,
industrial and agricultural waste and their unplanned leaking, run off, dumping
and disposal. Usually every water body has a certain capacity to clean itself by
diluting and breaking down some pollutants if given enough time.
How does contaminated water effect or
harm the biosphere?
What are effects of water pollution on humans?
Nobody can escape the effects of water pollution as the entire ecosystem gets affected by it. The effects
of water pollution may not appear immediately and may take years to show the damages. Water pollution
not only contaminates the quality of water bodies and destroys aquatic life and habitats, but also
eventually take a toll on human health and well-being. Sometimes this small looking conflict causes
death. Globally, water-borne diseases are the second leading cause of death in children below the age of
five years. Waterborne diseases are caused by microorganisms that most commonly are in contaminated
fresh water. Infection commonly results during bathing, washing, drinking, in the preparation of food, or
the consumption of food thus infected. Globally, water- borne diseases are the second leading cause of
death in children below the age of five years. An example of water borne disease outbreak in North
America is Walkerton Tragedy. Walkerton is a relatively small community in Ontario, Canada. The water
supply of the town gets contaminated with a highly dangerous bacteria from a farm into well. Starting
May 15, 2000, approximately 5,000 resident of the town began to experience diarrhea, infections and
other symptoms of the bacteria. At least seven people died directly from drinking this contaminated
water!
